Course 4: The Art and Science of Trading Individual Stocks

To truly maximize the wealth potential of your portfolio you need to consider trading individual stocks. Most "experts" will tell you that individuals cannot beat the market by trading stocks. The NAOI disagrees. If you are willing to learn how to find and analyze stocks and then, for those you buy, putting in place a trading plan that limits losses while letting profits run, then you have the potential of beating the markets; and not by just a little, but by a lot!

This course shows you how to find, evaluate and trade stocks that have the potential to double, triple or even increase 10-fold in relatively short periods of time. This is not a course about "day-trading" or a super-secret trading strategy. It is about learning how to find, analyze and trade stocks in the short to mid-term time range. This is called "momentum trading".

Course Foreword

This course is about trading individual stocks. In the lessons that follow you will learn what stocks are, how to find trading ideas, how to analyze stock trading candidates, how to place stock trades online and how to implement a “sell plan” for each stock that you buy.

Why Trade Individual Stocks?

With so many “easier” investment types available to you, such as mutual funds, why would anyone want to go to the trouble and assume the risks of trading individual stocks? The answer is simple. Trading individual stocks gives you the potential to earn returns that significantly exceed market averages and the typical broad-based mutual fund. Rare is the investment that will return 50%, 100%, 200% returns and higher. Individual stocks that produce these types of returns can be found in all types of market conditions.

What You Need To Be Effective

The trade-off for realizing these returns is your dedicating time and effort to the stock trading activity. But time and effort alone are not sufficient. They must be channeled into effective action. Such action starts with your setting a specific goal for your stock trading activities. Then you must learn how to find good stock ideas, analyze stock candidates and build a toolkit of online resources to support your trading decisions. Finally, when you buy a stock, you must put in place a plan for selling it to take profits or to limit losses. All of this, you will learn in this course.

You CAN Trade Stocks Successfully

Many people have a misconception about trading individual stocks. They see this activity as too risky, too complicated and requiring too much time. And this is all true if you believe that stock trading is easy and that all you have to do is find the right “shortcut”. People who buy stocks based on “can’t miss” trading systems, hot tips found in the financial media or unquestioned recommendations from stock brokers will typically fail at stock trading.

The fact that you are taking this course indicates that you are not one of these people. You realize that trading stocks requires knowledge, support resources and effort. You are willing to put in the work necessary to become a knowledgeable stock trader. And in this course you have found the resource that will enable you to translate this work into effective action. You have taken the first and most vital step toward becoming a confident stock trader. And as such, you will find that stock trading does not have to be complicated, extremely risky or overly demanding of your time.

Learn, Then Decide

It is not the purpose of the NAOI to convince you to trade stocks. Our only goal is teach you about stock trading and how you can use this knowledge, combined with online resources, to be an effective stock trader. As a graduate of this course you will be able to decide if you are willing to exchange the time and effort required for the potential rewards that stock trading offers. If you do decide to make stock trading a part of your overall investing activities, this course will enable you to do so with confidence.
